Do you ever feel tired in your shoulders, neck or back when working many hours in front of the computer? Well, you are not the only one.

At Web Responsive we want to help you feel better in the end of the day, so we have developed an application specifically to improve your body posture with an exercise and stretching program particularly targeted at your back, shoulders, neck and wrists.

The application uses the Pomodoro technique to help you increase your productivity while suggesting varied exercises and stretches in each pause.

It is simple, fun to use and unobtrusive. Here is an example of the application running:

WorkSmart is completely free and runs on Windows and Mac.

Web Responsive proudly launches our new project called HealthWize – easy tools for better health. This has been a long time dream of mine, so I am ecstatic to see it finally happen.

The goal of HealthWize is to bring easy and fun ways to improve your health and well being.

I believe a healthy body brings a healthy mind and visa versa. From my own personal experiences I have learned what a negative effect, problems with your health, can have on your life. It can be really hard to get back on track. When you do get back, you realize what a great learning experience it has been and how much you appreciate your health.

Check out the HealthWize website here:

At Web Responsive we take great pride in being masters of integration. Basically we love to join different technologies and let them play together.

Our latest experiment involved joining two rather different technologies: Joomla and Flex.

Using these two technologies we created a rich desktop (AIR) application, that facilitates the management of your media library on a Joomla site. One big advantage is that you can directly drag pictures from the desktop into the application and they will be automatically uploaded. Furthermore you don’t have to write the login information, every time you want to upload pictures to your Joomla site, since the login information for various sites, is stored directly in your AIR application.

To handle the communication between Flex and Joomla we used the open source library: J-AMFPHP

This library hasn’t been touched for a couple of years, so it needs a few changes to run smoothly.

Lastly, since the AIR application is dependent on a Joomla extension, to be able to communicate with a Joomla site, we build an FTP connection into the AIR application. This FTP connection made it possible to install the needed Joomla extension effortlessly on the Joomla site, from the application itself. The only thing needed is to configure the FTP connection for the site in the application.

The Flex FTP connection was made with the great open source library: FlexFTP which had to be a bit extended for this particular application.

All in all, 4 different open source solutions: Flex, Joomla, J-AMFPHP and FlexFTP were combined to make the application run.

You can get a free limited version of the application here: JEPUM Limited

The possibilities for other types of applications joining these technologies are endless. Let us know of your ideas.

Building Rich Internet Applications – RIAs takes a lot more skills than building a standard website.

With the constant advances in technology, the possibilities of creating powerful applications expands every day. This is wonderful for the developers, but not necessarily always fun for the users. If the user interface design development is not following, the user might have more power, but a lot harder to use applications and in the end need will spend more energy and be more frustrated using the applications.

Thus, as usual, with greater power, comes greater responsibility.

There is a need to better understand and improve the way we design our Rich Internet Applications. I found this great article, that describes Rich Internet Application Screen Design and gives a good idea of some of the challenges when designing the user interface of a RIA.

But more fundamentally speaking, we need to change our mindset and start thinking about generalizing the user interface design. One idea is to create User Interface design patterns, where we can formally analyze specific user interface parts and measure their efficiency and ease of use. Sites with user interface design patterns are being born every day and here is a good example of that: ui-patterns – a collection of user interface design patterns. Very interesting indeed.
